About

Hello, my name is Rachel Bernard.

I bring nearly twenty years of experience working with diverse children and families across residential, in-home, educational, and outpatient settings to the counseling relationship. My counseling approach is firmly rooted in Humanistic/Existential theory. I use both non-directive and directive approaches, integrating Narrative, Gestalt, Adlerian, and Cognitive-Behavioral interventions when appropriate. I believe that all that makes us human lies in relationship. It is through relationship that we learn about others, the world, and ourselves. In relationship we struggle, suffer, grow, heal, and thrive. The desire for connection and authenticity in relationship is a primary motivator in people’s lives. Counseling is a special kind of relationship that encourages self-exploration, self-awareness, and self-expression. It provides a growth-fostering environment in which individuals have the opportunity to develop a better understanding of self and others; develop a sense of worth; develop a sense of empowerment; develop a broader perspective; have the opportunity to heal from past wounds; learn more effective ways to approach changes and challenges; and develop healthier interaction patterns in relationships.

I received my Bachelors in Psychology from the University of Texas and my Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Regis University. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor, National Board Certified Counselor in General Counseling, and Certified Child and Adolescent Counselor.

In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family and dogs outdoors. I love the four seasons and mountain activities of Colorado. I practice yoga and Pilates, play the drums, love to cook, and am a voracious reader.
